If you are involved in a suicide prevention or mental health listserv or newsgroup, it’s easy to let other members know about the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by sending them this short message:
I thought you might be interested in some information about the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s mission is to provide immediate assistance to individuals in suicidal crisis by connecting them to the nearest crisis center in their area through a national, toll-free telephone number: 1-800-273-TALK (8255). This is the only national suicide prevention and intervention telephone resource funded by the Federal Government. For more information, you can visit http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org.

How To Describe the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

E-mail Signature Lines

By adding one of the short paragraphs below to your e-mail signature, you can help us promote the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline every time you send an e-mail. We also have included instructions on adding or modifying your signature for several major e-mail providers.

Instructions for adding a signature line for major e-mail servers:

Microsoft Outlook Express
  • On the Tools menu, select Options, and then select the Signatures tab.
  • To create a signature, select New and either enter text in the Edit Signature box or select File and then find the text or HTML file you’d like to use.
  • Select the “Add signatures to all outgoing messages” check box.
Microsoft Outlook
  • Select the Inbox.
  • On the Tools menu, select Options.
  • On the Mail Format tab, select Signature Picker, and then select New.
  • Type a name for your signature, and select Next. You can create multiple signatures and give each one a different name.
  • In the Signature text box, type the text for your signature. Then, 1) use both the Font and the Paragraph buttons to apply formatting to your signature, 2) use the Advanced Edit button to use Microsoft Word for more powerful editing of your signature, 3) use the vCard From Contact button to attach a vCard to your signature.
  • Select OK three times.
Yahoo! Mail
  • Select the “Mail Options” link in the upper right-hand area of the page, and select the “Signature” link under the Personalization column on the left.
  • Your current signature (if any) will be displayed in the text area.
  • Change your signature by typing over the existing text, or enter a new one by typing in the blank text area. If you’re using HTML tags, select the “HTML” button. (Note: When using HTML in your signature, make sure you select the “HTML tags allowed” button in the Compose field. If you don’t do this, the recipient will see only what is written in plain text.)
  • If you would like the “Use Signature” check box on the Compose Mail screen to be checked by default when composing a new message, select the “Add signature to all messages as default” check box beneath the text area. (You have the option to uncheck this box if you want to send a message without your signature.)
  • Remember to select the “Save” button when you’re done. This will put your new signature into effect.
Hotmail
  • On the Options page, select Signature under Additional Options.
  • Type the information you want in your signature, and select OK.
  • Please note: You can personalize your signature by choosing different colors, fonts, symbols, and more. Select the check box next to “Show the rich-text toolbar,” and select the options you want. The use of HTML formatting in your signature is not recommended.
